TELL 'EM HOW IT IS: Briefing Fee Earners on Partnership and Financial Performance

Partners in many large law firms (when they're not too busy) sometimes wonder why the lawyers in their teams aren't more loyal and dedicated. Why don't thy work harder? Why do they gripe? Why do they leave?

There is another side to the coin.

Many junior solicitors look up at the partnership body and see the homogenous cadre of the chosen, an exclusive club whose elitist nature seems confirmed by the profit per partner figures in annual magazine surveys. It's 'them and us'.

When I'm discussing law firm profitability with salaried fee earners, someone usually exclaims "why should I work hard to make the partners even richer?" "I feel like an ant" a two year qualified solicitor once memorably explained...
